Necklace to Neckline Tips

I have a confession to make: although I love doing things like camping, hiking and playing in the metal and wood shop, I still love to feel like a girl. When I have an opportunity to get out of the house, I like to grab and go, but still want to feel beautiful regardless of the amount of time I’ve actually spent getting ready. The capsule wardrobe trend is very popular right now and I realized I’ve been doing this for years for my day job without having a name for it. A few staple tops, skirts, pants and layering pieces are a simple way to get ready on busy mornings. Add some beautiful jewelry with the right necklaces for necklines, a sweet scarf or both and the simple becomes sublime!

I decided to write this style guide because so many friends have asked what kind of necklace to wear with dresses or tops they have in their closet. I’ve included several tops that are perfect options for creating an effortless casual elegant capsule wardrobe with some spicy date night styles, too. I hope you enjoy this guide and would love to see how you pull things together. Without further ado, here are 12 easy tips for deciding what necklace to wear with what neckline. Tap each style for details and be sure to scroll to the end for your FREE printable necklace neckline cheat sheet!

The v-neck is a timeless classic that can dress up or down depending on the type of material and cut of the blouse or shirt it accents. The same holds true for jewelry worn with it. The best necklace for a v-neck dress or top is a shorter necklace and showy pendant. Longer necklaces also work with lower cut v-neck tops. Frame the necklace in the center of the v-neck opening.

Tops with a ballet neck are so very simple, yet elegant. This style shines when paired with interesting bottoms and beautiful jewelry. A good necklace for a ballet neck top is a simple pendant in a mid-length. Statement necklaces also work well to dress up a ballet neck. Choose a necklace that rests above the neckline for optimal styling.

The square neckline has its origins in Baroque French fashion. An elegant choice for evening, they also work well for casual day attire in fun prints and fabrics. Square necklines flatter many body shapes and can add a touch of sexiness while still providing coverage to wear a bra. Square necklines look beautiful with longer necklaces that feature drop or fringe pendants. They also go well with chokers or statement earrings for a more casual look.

Wearing an open back neckline is a very alluring look and a great way to show off your beautiful skin for a night out. Try one with a cami for a simple daytime option, too. Open back tops look beautiful with mid-length and long necklaces that add interest to the neckline. Choker necklaces featuring a long backdrop pendant also look stunning with this style.

The crew neck is another staple outfit maker in many capsule wardrobes. It can do double-duty as both a casual or work option simply by changing layers and/or adding jewelry. Statement or bib necklaces look fabulous with crew neck dressy tees. For a change, a longer Bohemian style pendant or multiple layer necklaces also work with a blousy crew neck dress.

Simple, yet flattering, the boat neck is an excellent choice for versatility by simply changing the fabric: slinky and rich for a date night, crisp blue and white stripes for day. The best necklace for a boat neck top is a multi-strand or layered necklace stack. When shopping, be sure the shortest strand doesn’t get trapped behind your top. A single, long pendant necklace can also work when pairing your top with a flowy skirt or wide leg pants.

A current fashion trend inspired by the past – off the shoulder fashions were of the moment in the mid-1800s, again with the shoulder bearing flappers in the 1920s, and yet again with 1970s free spirited dressing – this style is timeless and sexy for a sultry summer look. The best necklace for an off the shoulder dress or top is a bold multi-strand or layered set in a mid-length. Long pendants also look great with this beautiful style for a fun, beachy look.

Beautiful halter tops have their roots in 1940s Art Deco styles and are a timeless choice for adding a touch of sexiness to any outfit. By changing the neckline depth and fabric, halters are also a great choice for a daytime casual outfit. Halter tops go from sexy to a great daytime option simply by changing the neckline depth and fabric. They tend to form a natural frame for pendant necklaces and also look stunning with a simple layered necklace stack.

Turtle and mock neck tops look terrific on their own or as a base layer in a capsule wardrobe. Dressed up or down, the turtleneck is the ultimate wardrobe staple. Turtlenecks and mock-necks add length to the torso and provide a classic backdrop for mid-length and longer pendant necklace. Try a lariat as a new favorite best necklace for your mock neck dress!

Scoop neck tops are a great capsule wardrobe option. They go well under layers and also stand on their own as a nice backdrop to jewelry. Dressed up or down, scoop neck tanks, tops and sweaters are always in style. Statement necklaces, especially those featuring a bib design, are perfect with scoop neck tops and dresses. Minimalist necklaces can also work well for this style for more casual, understated look.

Perfect for the office and a capsule wardrobe staple, the classic button down blouse looks great with sleeves or try one without for a sweet weekend style. The perfect necklaces for a classic collared shirt are pendants and chokers. When choosing a pendant necklace for your collared dress or top, aim for one that doesn't tangle with the buttons.

Strapless tops and dresses are perfect for summer or for layering in cooler seasons. They do best showing off, well, you! A simple choker is the perfect complement for a strapless dress. Another option that can make a strapless top become a showstopper is a pair of large or long statement earrings. Long pendant necklaces can also work with this style with flowy skirts or wide leg pants.

P.S. Here’s one of my favorite styles for spring: a boxy sweater and comfy jeans! I love the v-neck and shaker stitch of this one in a neutral color that I can wear again in the fall. Pair a v-neck sweater and boyfriend jeans like these with a pretty pendant, dreamy shoes, a great bag and hat to dress up the look and have some fun!
