Our first camping trip of 2019 found us hitting the trails of Hocking County, Ohio. In the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, this area is rich in natural and cultural history. One of the most striking features is a layer of rock known as the Black Hand Sandstone. It's rich gold, amber, chestnut and deep brown hues create a beautiful backdrop for hemlock forests.

Eastern Hemlock trees form the backbone of the forests in Hocking Hills. They establish intricate root systems and trees reaching 90 feet can be found clinging to the sides of the yellow cliffs in the region. All of this from a cone which is the size of most average pinky fingers! It proves the old 'great things come in small packages' adage. To me, it also shows God's sense of humor in His great design.

The stately Hemlock trees, Black Hand Sandstone and Sycamore trees abundant in the area were a major influence in the design of this small fine art jewelry collection. I decided to use a heavy hand rubbed finish to the sterling silver and copper pieces to bring the warmth of spring to the surface. One of my favorite designs is a molten glass enamel over copper stone to mimic the Black Hand Sandstone.

On a little side trip, we discovered an abandoned railroad tunnel. This line ran to a small coal mining town called Moonville. The community was isolated in the rugged wilderness and had my imagination going wild over what it must have been like to live there in the mid-late 1800s. It was a chilly day and thoughts of a warm Pendleton wool camp blanket came to mind for sure!
