Milky Way - Winter 2018 Jewelry Collection
"Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing." (Isaiah 40:26 ESV)
Our Sun (a star) and the planets, including Earth, rotating around it are part of the Milky Way Galaxy. All of the stars we see in the night sky are inside our own Milky Way Galaxy. It’s difficult to count the number of stars from Earth, but NASA’s best estimates tell us the Milky Way is made up of approximately 100 billion stars! Can you imagine the enormity of the Milky Way alone? Now, step outside our galaxy and realize we can see three more galaxies in our night sky with the naked eye and NASA has found many more with telescopes. The size of the universe is staggering and we are a very tiny part of it. Yet, even so, if you are a believer, you can rest assured the God who created the universe and set each and every star knows the number of hairs on your head.
I love the way God’s Word, the Bible, talks about infinity and knitting humans together in our Mother’s wombs. In the King James version of the Bible, the word firmament is used to describe the stars. I have been sketching up celestial designs for quite some time and am looking forward to breathing life into them as art to remind us God is near and He cares. The first installation of Firmament is the Milky Way Collection.
The enamel focal point of the Milky Way Necklace is inspired by a photograph of the galaxy band as viewed from the mountains in Nevada (photo credit unknown). The miniature picture is painted onto copper using a technique called wet packing where individual grains of enamel are carefully placed, then fired. The pendant is then hand sawed, engraved and soldered with a fine silver bezel to hold the piece. Butter soft suede leather in chocolate brown fastened with a sterling silver slider make an adjustable necklace that is easy to wear. Pietersite gemstones, an aggregate of Tiger and Hawk’s eye gems from Namibia, were selected to complement the enamel design and finish the necklace.
Sterling silver earrings tipped with Pietersite gems and a bracelet sprinkled with stars complete the Milky Way Jewelry Collection. These pieces are forged by hand using traditional silversmith techniques.
