Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist, humanitarian and an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the Civil War. Escaping slavery, Harriet made thirteen missions herself to rescue friends and family via the Underground Railroad. Known as "Moses" through the network, Harriet never lost a passenger as she helped countless others cross the border to freedom with her selfless spirit. As the Civil War broke out, Harriet joined the Union Army as a cook, then as a nurse. However, with her extraordinary experiences bringing others to freedom, she was a natural to become a spy and scout for the Army. She was the first woman to lead an armed expedition into battle and guided the raid at Combahee Ferry which liberated 700 slaves. After the war, Harriet became an active member of the suffrage movement until illness and her subsequent death overtook her.
